Croatia

Croatia (official name: Republic of Croatia) is a European country, geographically located at the transition from Central to South-eastern Europe. Croatia borders with Slovenia and Hungary to the north, and to the east with Serbia, in the south and east by Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro. With Italy it has a sea border. During the Croatian history some of the most significant cultural influences came from the Central European and Mediterranean culture.

According to the 2001 census Croatia has 4,437,460 inhabitants. Croats make up 89.6% of the population, and the biggest national minorities are the Serbs, who constitute 4.5% of the population, while all other national minorities constitute less than 0.5% of the population. The land area covers 56,542 km ² and the area of the territorial sea is 31,067 km ², which places Croatia among medium-sized European countries. Its capital is Zagreb, which is the economic, cultural and political center of the country.

According to the political structure Croatia is a parliamentary democracy. It is a member of the United Nations as of 22 May 1992. Croatia is a member of the Council of Europe, the World Trade Organization, the Central European Free Trade Agreement, North Atlantic treaty Organization. Since 2004 it is a candidate for EU membership.
